The Super Nintendo: History, Variants & Hardware

Model Variants

The Super Nintendo launched in 1991 in North America (as the Super Famicom in Japan, 1990). The original SNES has a distinctive gray box design. A compact SNES Jr. (SNS-101) was released in 1997 with a smaller form factor. European PAL consoles use the same shell shape as the Super Famicom. The original pack-in game was Super Mario World.

Hardware Vulnerabilities

SNES cartridges use CR2032 tabbed batteries for save data — these typically last 20–25 years, meaning most original batteries are now dead. The SNES shell is prone to yellowing due to UV exposure and bromine in the ABS plastic. The original power supply (NTSC model) is a common failure point. Cartridge contacts oxidize and need cleaning.

Regional Lockouts

SNES cartridges are physically different shapes between regions. NTSC (North America) cartridges have a rectangular tab that fits only in NTSC consoles. Super Famicom (Japan) cartridges are a different shape but work in NTSC SNES consoles with a cartridge adapter. PAL (Europe) cartridges will not fit in NTSC consoles without modification.
